A multivitamin is a preparation that contains vitamins, dietary minerals, and other nutritional ingredients and is designed to be used as a dietary supplement. Tablets, capsules, pastilles, powders, liquids, and injectable formulations are all forms of such preparations that are commercially accessible. With the exception of injectable formulations, which are exclusively accessible and administered under medical supervision, multivitamins are recognized as a food by the Codex Alimentarius Commission (the United Nations’ authority on food standards), which classifies them as a food category.
Multiple vitamin supplements are frequently given in conjunction with dietary minerals. As defined by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a multivitamin/mineral supplement is a supplement that contains three or more vitamins and minerals but does not contain any herbal supplements, hormones, or drugs. Each vitamin and mineral is included at a dose that is below the tolerable upper level as determined by the FDA and does not pose a risk of adverse health effects. The phrases “multivitamin” and “multimineral” are frequently used in the same context.
No scientific definition exists for either of these terms. Some scientific research suggests that taking multivitamin supplements does not prevent cancer, heart disease, or other problems in otherwise healthy persons, according to some sources. There may, however, be certain categories of persons who might benefit from taking multivitamin pills in addition to the general population (for example, people with poor nutrition or at high risk of macular degeneration).
